On the China-DPRK border...

Dandong - 2002-Doris-DD

Doris and Patrick went on an excursion (sponsored by the Intercontinental Hotel) to Dandong.  This city borders China and the DPRK (North Korea).  The river is the Yalu River, the bridge pictured spanning it still has damage preserved that occurred during the Korean War by U.S. B-29 bombers.  Also pictured is the Great Wall of China, part of it at least.  In the Yalu river pictures, the side of the river with developments (buildings) is the China side, the side without development is the North Korean side.  I had to work that day.

Dandong - May, 2004

Divided into three groups, each are quite diverse.  This trip was from 02 May to 04 May 2004.  We went to Dandong, China via train from Shenyang.  The trip takes a little over three hours on the express train.  Dandong is the largest Chinese border city with a population of approximately 2.4 million.  It's host to the only rail bridge that crosses the Yalu River into North Korea (DPRK).  The weather was drizzly and cold until we left on the morning of the 4th.

2004-05-03-P10-DD & 2004-05-03-U20-DD - Us bowling, on the train, and various pictures of the city.  Newly re-opened Korean War Museum in China, it includes all types of documentation and military memorabilia.  There's lots of captured U.S. equipment and uniforms.  It now adds the story of the Soviet Air Force pilots who actively participated against the UN forces during the war.  While we naturally didn't actually "step" into the DPRK, we did get a lot of pictures of the other side.  The majority are from the bridges (only one is functional, the other is kept as a tourist attraction as it was bombed by B-29 bombers during the Korean War) there are also a handful of pictures from the end of the Great Wall.  The field behind the pond is the DPRK.  There are more pictures from a boat on the Yalu River, and the pictures with fields are pictures of the DPRK located at the end of the Great Wall.    Great Wall - The Easternmost part of the Great Wall.  Quite steep in places, it's a good hike, especially on a slippery, drizzly day.  There's also a museum at the end.  My first time to the Great Wall, although I had been in China two years at the time.

KW Dialogue - These are pictures of the English translations of the Chinese side of the Korean War.  They're from a different angle that Americans would have learned.  They include dialogue about U.S. biological warfare that the Chinese, Soviets, and North Koreans have alleged to have occurred in North Korea and Northeastern China.  Some pictures may be difficult to read, as I didn't use a flash and they were indoor pictures.
